The dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in 1854. The dogma took a long time to be developed because Fathers had difficulty seeing Mary as sinless. But in 1858 Mary appeared to Bernadette at Lourdes and identified herself as the Immaculate Conception.
